About Multistage Pumps
Maximise Your Production Output with High-Quality Multistage Pumps
At Hunter Pumps, we are your trusted provider of efficient and reliable multistage pump solutions in Australia. We understand that finding the right multistage pump for your fluid handling needs can be a daunting task. That’s why we offer an extensive range of pumps, including one of the most popular types of pumps – the multistage pressure pump.
What is a Multistage Pressure Pump?
Horizontal Multistage Pump:
These pumps feature a rotating assembly anchored in place by bearing housings. This design makes them suitable for high pressures and flow rates.
Vertical Multistage Pump:
Vertical multistage pumps have stages stacked vertically, resulting in a more compact size and design compared to horizontal multistage pumps. They are ideal for applications with limited space, as their straightforward pump-and-motor configuration can generate high fluid pressures efficiently.
Whether you need a pump for domestic use or large-scale industrial applications, our multistage pumps are a reliable and efficient solution. Here at Hunter Pumps, we pride ourselves on providing pumps that are designed and manufactured to meet the specific needs of our customers.
What is a Multistage Pressure Pump?
A multistage pump, also known as a pressure pump, is a type of pump where the fluid flows through two or more impellers positioned in series. This configuration results in multiple liquid chambers or stages linked sequentially. Each stage encompasses an impeller, accompanied by a diffuser and return guide vanes, all contained within the same stage casing.
These impellers are set up in a linear arrangement and revolve around a single shaft propelled by a power source, typically a motor. The architectural structure of multistage pumps ensures the fluid linearly moves through the chambers.

Here are some key features and benefits of multistage pumps:
Compact Design
Their compact structure allows for easy installation in diverse settings.
Global Usage
Their worldwide usage testifies to their dependability and versatility.
High Reliability
These pumps are recognised for their consistent, reliable performance.
Service-Friendly
Their design emphasises ease of service, which minimises downtime and maintenance expenses.
Broad Performance Scope
Available in a range of sizes and stage numbers, these pumps can deliver the necessary flow and pressure.
Low Noise Operation
Their low-noise operation contributes to a more pleasant environment.
Customisable Solutions
Grundfos provides tailored solutions to accommodate specific customer needs.
The pump unit features optimised hydraulics and multiple connection types. Besides vertical multistage pumps, Grundfos also provides horizontal multistage pumps with several impeller stages connected in series. These are perfect for applications that require high heat, such as pressure boosting and liquid transfer in nearly any industrial application.
Applications for Multistage Pumps
Multistage pumps are not suitable for handling solids and abrasive materials due to the narrow clearance between the impeller and pump volute unless they are oversized. Hence, they are commonly used with water and other low-viscosity fluids. Their wide pressure range makes them a preferred option for agriculture applications such as:
- Feeding boilers
- Implementing reverse osmosis
- Boosting water supply
- Irrigation purposes
- Oil and gas production
- Firefighting measures
- Temperature regulation via heating/cooling conditioning
- Facilitating water circulation
- Mining
- Pressurising water to create snow for sports and resorts
How Do Multistage Pumps Work?
Multistage pumps work systematically to increase fluid pressure. First, the pump is prepared through priming, which fills it up. Once ready, the fluid enters the pump through the inlet, influenced by the suction line pressure. Inside, the pump has multiple spinning impellers.
The fluid moves through these impellers one by one, either from left to right or the other way around, depending on the pump’s design.
As it moves from one impeller to the next, its pressure rises. It’s like passing the fluid from one boosting station to another, with each station (impeller) increasing the fluid’s energy.
Finally, when the fluid exits the pump, its pressure is much higher than when it entered. Interestingly, even though the pressure increases with each stage, the speed or flow of the fluid remains the same if the pump’s speed (RPM) remains constant.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
While multistage pumps are not inherently self-priming, they can be adapted to function as such. This is achieved by installing a foot valve on the suction pipe or utilising a vacuum-generating pump (either air or electric-driven) that activates when the suction pressure falls below a set point.
Multistage pumps typically aren't designed to handle solids due to the tight clearances within the pump. However, larger models with expanded clearances can manage solids, especially fibrous ones. In situations where a large number of solids may be present, it's advisable to use a seal cyclone separator to separate solids from the mechanical seal.
Multistage pumps are versatile and suitable for a range of applications, including high-pressure cleaning, pressure boosting, and other tasks that require reliable fluid pressure. They're particularly beneficial in industries that require high-pressure output and energy-efficient solutions.
Regular maintenance is key to ensuring the longevity and optimal performance of your multistage pump. This typically includes regular inspection for wear and tear, lubrication of moving parts, checking seal integrity, and cleaning to prevent the buildup of solids or debris. Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions for specific maintenance guidelines.
