How Do Multistage Pumps Work?

Multistage pumps work systematically to increase fluid pressure. First, the pump is prepared through priming, which fills it up. Once ready, the fluid enters the pump through the inlet, influenced by the suction line pressure. Inside, the pump has multiple spinning impellers. 

The fluid moves through these impellers one by one, either from left to right or the other way around, depending on the pump’s design. 

As it moves from one impeller to the next, its pressure rises. It’s like passing the fluid from one boosting station to another, with each station (impeller) increasing the fluid’s energy. 

Finally, when the fluid exits the pump, its pressure is much higher than when it entered. Interestingly, even though the pressure increases with each stage, the speed or flow of the fluid remains the same if the pump’s speed (RPM) remains constant.
